Abstract. The effectiveness of applying several vocabulary learning strategies (VSL) at a time has been proven by many studies. Therefore, high achievers attempt to use various strategies and employ more procedures in order to enlarge the vocabulary size (volume). To be more specific, VSL have been proven in traditional ways of learning foreign languages. According to numerous studies, those strategies are the keyword method, note taking, spelling using audio, oral repetition with the use of audio recording, creating flashcards and some other ones.
It should be noted that the world of technologies has influenced society greatly for the last time, the same has happened to the field of education. The variety of applications and tools permits students to memorise vocabulary using contemporary digitised methods. The controversy between the adherents of non-digital learning and learning with the help of digital technologies does not diminish. This research shows the attempt to compare the effectiveness of VSL in traditional and digital approaches to learn English vocabulary. The experiment has been conducted on the linguistics students whose level of English as a foreign language (EFL) is Elementary (A2). The students have been divided into an experimental and control groups. Taking into consideration the learners’ knowledge and preferences in learning vocabulary, the students have been divided into 4 mini-groups, in which they have gained the method of learning vocabulary that they prefer on a daily basis or, on the contrary, they do not give preference. It has been done in order to prove that learning vocabulary by using digital sources is more effective than traditional methods even for those students who prefer to relate to non-digital strategies. The experiment has examined the effectiveness of using relatively similar strategies with the help of Quizlet, a free of charge application, which permits students to memorise words and their definitions by providing such strategies as flashcards, game mode and many others, instead of the traditional approach. The obtained results have proved the effectiveness of using digital technologies in vocabulary acquisition.
